Lost 4x01 - "The Beginnig of the End"

So, after a year of not giving a shit, I feel like writing about Lost again. I don't know why I stopped, but this episode was good enough to get me started again. It probably had something to do with my first year of law school eating my soul, but I just wasn't in to it last year. Maybe I'll eventually do some write ups of season three, but, in all honesty, probably not. Most of the fun of these things is the speculation. And while there are still a lot of unanswered questions, most of the quirky shit that pops up in individual episodes gets solved shortly thereafter.

Anyway, without further adieu, "The Beginning of the End:"

• Oh Hurley; a 2^nd gen camaro and a jean jacket? That’s just sad…
• Looked like Jack’s dad was sitting in Jacob’s cabin. Weird that Hurley saw Christian rather than someone he, himself, knew. This seems to indicate that Jack’s dad might actually be there and still alive.
• Of course, Hurley could simply be just another Lostie who coincidentally knows Jack’s dad. After all, Claire, Sawyer, and Anna Lucia all seemed to have met him.
• Also, they eye that popped up and looked out at Hurley kinda looked to me like Desmond. I guess it could have been Jacob, though, as that seems to make more sense.
• What’s the secret that their keeping?
• That they left people behind?
• That they lived on the island for a long time?
• That there were other survivors?
• Nice touch to see Anna Lucia’s partner back.
• Abbadon, the lawyer guy from Oceanic, his name apparently means something along the lines of “land of the dead.”
• The flashback is, again, a flash-forward, but apparently not as far forward as the last flash-forward.
• Meaning, we know three of the six people who made it off the island; Jack, Kate, and Hurley. We also know that at least one of the 6 died, and the dead person was neither Jack nor Kate.
• Also, sort of a note back to last season’s finale, where Jack is going on about his dad to both the new chief of surgery and the pharmacists; Jack talk’s about his dad as if he’s still alive. At the time, I assumed it was just evidence of Jack’s drug addiction and a means by which to disguise the flash-forward. Thinking about it now, though, particularly after the last little webisode, where Christian tells Vincent the Dog to go wake Jack right when the plane first crashed, and the scene in Jacob’s cabin; maybe Jack’s dad is still alive.
• Even though I don’t particularly care that Charlie died, I do feel bad for Hurley. His character seems to have changed a bit. Instantly upon hearing about his friend’s death, Hurley ceased to be the jovial comic relief he’s been since the pilot. He threw the radio into the ocean and then sided with Locke.
• Bit of surprise that Rose wanted to stay with Jack, and thus likely leave the island. Her past characterization would seem to lead to the conclusion that she would want to stay. Not a big surprise, though, that she doesn’t trust Locke. I think any normal person would, or should, have a real problem with Locke. He did, after all, throw a knife into a woman’s back without any obvious provocation.
• When Hurley “willed” Charlie away at the mental hospital, I couldn’t help but think it was shot in such a way that Charlie could have simply gotten up and left Hurley’s field of view. Might just have been a shooting technique to save money, though, and otherwise meaningless. I think one of the other patient’s saw Charlie, too.
• Not entirely sure, but I think the flash-forwards take place in 2007; bearded Jack from lasts season’s finale had a KRZR phone. Might just be a mistake, but if it’s not, I wonder if that means they’ve been back for a couple of years, or were actually missing for a couple of years.
• The guy with the video camera filming Hurley’s arrest was the same guy that played both Hurley’s and Locke’s respective bosses. I wonder if it’s supposed to be the same character.
• In Hurley’s hallucination, Charlie has “they need you” written on his hand.
• I wonder if the Oceanic Six refers only to the plane crash survivors that were rescued. More specifically, I wonder if Juliet, Ben, Desmond, Alex, and the French Chick might have also made it off the island, but without the same fanfare.
