Replicators - The SG-1 Kind, Not the Trek Kind
Engadget has a little blurb on Self-Assembling Robots.
I'm both excited and frightened by this.
The little bits apparently float around on a cushion of air and attach themselves to a master unit. If they come together incorrectly, they detach and autocorrect. The whole process is modeled on the structure of DNA.
Unlike that Chinese balancing robot, though (you know, the one that showed off its dexterity by sword fighting), these don't seem to have any other function than assembly. That's somewhat comforting, I guess. At least they won't be able to harvest me for building materials. Well, not yet, anyway.
I still don't trust the little mechanical bastards, though.
