Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes...

So, a company called Sona Mobile (I wonder if that's an intentional homage or just a coincidence) is partnering up with Viacom to create a Star Trek Communicator phone.

These phones apparently won't actually be modeled after the original series communicators like the older, Bluetooth model pictured, but will instead be something closer to Star Trek themed phones.

Interchangeable faceplates and a Star Trek inspired user interface seems to be what they're really talking about here. The phone will also have other Star Trek themed crap, like ring tones and games, and will feature the usual array of useless cell phone bullshit.

As cool as this might initially sound, I'm sure it'll end up being either mediocre or just down-right shitty. Viacom and Paramount have just about beat this horse dead in the past few years and I really can't imagine that this thing is anything more than one last attempt to milk Trek for all it's worth.

Still, the thought of my cell phone playing the original communicator chirp for an incoming call is tempting...

Read more about it here.
